Claude Code is not a chatbot. It looks nothing like ChatGPT, nothing like the Claude chat app you might already use. There's no friendly conversation window. No suggested prompts. Just a blinking cursor in a terminal.
And that terminal is where things get interesting.
Claude Code is an autonomous AI agent built by Anthropic. You point it at a project on your computer, describe what you want in plain English, and it does the work. It reads your files, writes code, runs commands, tests its own output, finds errors, fixes them, and keeps going until the job is done. Or until you tell it to stop.
We've been running Claude Code at RSL/A for months now. Not as a novelty. As core infrastructure. It builds our client websites, generates our blog content, manages our CMS, handles deployments, and runs automations that would otherwise require a full-time developer. We're a two-person agency. Claude Code is the reason that's possible.
This guide explains what Claude Code actually is, how it works, what it can and can't do, and whether it makes sense for your business. No jargon, no hype, just what you need to know.
How Claude Code is different from Claude (the chat app)

This is the first thing that trips people up. Claude and Claude Code share the same underlying model. Same brain. But the experience is completely different.
Claude (the chat app) lives in your browser at claude.ai. You type a message, it responds. You can upload files, have conversations, get writing help. It's reactive. You ask, it answers. Every step requires your input.
Claude Code lives in your terminal. You install it on your machine, navigate to a project folder, and launch it. From that point, it has access to every file in that project. When you describe a task, it doesn't just give you advice. It actually does the work. It reads your codebase, plans an approach, writes the code, runs tests, and iterates until things work.
The analogy I use: Claude chat is like texting a really smart friend for advice. Claude Code is like hiring a contractor who shows up, looks at the blueprints, and starts building.

How Claude Code actually works
Here's the workflow, step by step. Nothing complicated, but understanding this will change how you think about AI tools.
Step 1: You describe what you want
You type a plain English description of what you need. "Build a contact form that sends an email notification." Or "Find the bug that's breaking the checkout page." Or "Generate 10 blog posts about AI marketing and upload them to our CMS."
You don't need to know code to describe what you want. You need to know what you want. The more specific you are, the better the output.
Step 2: Claude reads your project
This is the part that makes Claude Code fundamentally different from every chatbot. It reads your entire project directory. Every file, every folder, every configuration. It understands the structure, the languages being used, the dependencies, the existing patterns.
So when you say "add a contact form," it doesn't generate a generic form. It looks at your existing code, matches your styling framework, uses your existing component patterns, and builds something that fits. Context changes everything.
Step 3: Claude plans the approach
Before writing a single line of code, Claude Code thinks through the task. It identifies which files need to change, what new files need to be created, what dependencies might be required. You can see this planning happen in real-time in your terminal.
This planning step is crucial. It's why Claude Code doesn't just produce random code snippets. It produces coherent, project-aware solutions.
Step 4: Claude builds
Now it starts writing. Creating files, modifying existing ones, installing dependencies, setting up configurations. It works through the task step by step, and you can watch every change happen in your terminal.
Here's the key difference from a chatbot: it's actually making changes to your files. Not showing you code to copy and paste. The files on your computer are being modified in real-time.
Step 5: Claude tests and fixes
After building, Claude Code runs tests, checks for errors, and fixes issues. If something breaks, it reads the error message, understands the problem, and tries again. This loop continues until the task is complete or it hits something it can't solve on its own.
This is the autonomous part. You're not debugging errors and feeding them back into a chat window. Claude Code handles that loop itself.
The CLAUDE.md file: why context is everything
Here's something most people miss about Claude Code, and it's arguably the most important feature.
Every project can have a file called CLAUDE.md. It's a plain text file that tells Claude how your business works. Your naming conventions, your writing style, your preferred tools, your folder structure, your coding standards, your permissions.
At RSL/A, our CLAUDE.md file includes things like:
- Use camelCase for all file and folder names
- Write in Rahul's voice (conversational, specific numbers, no corporate speak)
- Never use em dashes or en dashes
- Use "to" instead of hyphens for ranges ($5,000 to $10,000)
- These are the MCP integrations we use (Notion, Sanity, GitHub, Stripe, etc.)
- These are the category IDs for our blog posts
- This is how our content pipeline works
When Claude Code starts a session, it reads this file first. Every task it performs follows these rules automatically. No reminding, no re-explaining. The context is baked in.
Without CLAUDE.md, Claude Code is a capable generalist. With it, Claude Code becomes a specialist who knows your business inside out. The difference in output quality is enormous.
What Claude Code can actually do
Let me be specific. Not theoretical capabilities from a marketing page. Real things we do with it every week.
Build websites and web applications. Full-stack. Front-end components, back-end logic, database schemas, deployment configurations. We've built entire client websites from a description and design reference.
Generate and manage content. Blog posts, case studies, SEO metadata, FAQ schema, image generation prompts. Our content pipeline is almost entirely Claude Code driven. It writes the content, generates images via API, uploads to our CMS (Sanity), patches metadata, and sets up internal linking.
Debug and fix code. Point it at a broken project and tell it what's wrong. It reads the error logs, traces the issue through the codebase, and fixes it. This alone saves hours per week.
Run scripts and automations. Data migration, API integrations, batch processing, file organization. Any task that involves reading data, transforming it, and writing it somewhere else.
Deploy and manage infrastructure. Push code to production, configure hosting platforms, set up CI/CD pipelines. We deploy through Vercel, and Claude Code handles the entire workflow.
Refactor and reorganize projects. Rename files across a codebase, restructure folder hierarchies, update imports, migrate from one framework to another. Tasks that would take days of manual find-and-replace happen in minutes.
What Claude Code cannot do
Setting expectations matters. Here's where Claude Code hits its limits.
It doesn't think strategically. Claude Code will execute brilliantly on whatever you describe, but it won't tell you what to build. Business strategy, market positioning, product decisions. Those are still yours. Claude Code is the builder, not the architect.
It doesn't browse the internet in real-time. Claude Code works with your local files and its training data. It can't look up current prices, check live APIs, or verify today's news. There are ways around this (MCP servers, which we cover in our MCP guide), but out of the box, it's working with what's on your machine.
It makes mistakes. Good ones, usually. Mistakes that are close to right and easy to fix. But if you don't review the output, things can go wrong. Always review before deploying to production. Always.
It needs clear instructions. "Make my website better" produces mediocre results. "Add a testimonials section below the hero with a 3-column grid layout, each card showing a quote, client name, and company logo" produces excellent results. Specificity is the difference between useful and frustrating.
It doesn't replace domain expertise. If you don't understand what you're building, Claude Code's output will look impressive but might be fundamentally wrong. You need enough knowledge to validate the approach, even if you can't write the code yourself.
Do you need to know how to code?

This is the question everyone asks. And the honest answer is: it depends on what you're doing.
For basic tasks: No. You can use Claude Code to generate content, run scripts, organize files, and handle straightforward automations without writing a single line of code yourself. You need to be comfortable with a terminal (opening it, navigating to a folder, typing commands), but that's a 15 to 20 minute learning curve, not a computer science degree.
For building software: You need enough understanding to validate what Claude Code produces. You don't need to write code, but you need to know if the code makes sense. Can you read a React component and tell if it's structured reasonably? Can you look at a database query and know if it's pulling the right data? That level of literacy makes a huge difference.
For our agency: I'm not a traditional developer. I learned to code by working with AI tools, not the other way around. Claude Code is the reason I can build full-stack applications. But I've spent enough time with code to know what good output looks like and when something's off.

Getting started with Claude Code
The setup is straightforward. Here's what you need:
- An Anthropic subscription. Claude Pro ($20/month) includes Claude Code access. That's the minimum tier.
- A terminal. On Mac, that's Terminal or iTerm. On Windows, PowerShell or Windows Terminal. On Linux, whatever terminal you already use.
- Node.js installed. Claude Code runs on Node.js. If you don't have it, download it from nodejs.org. Takes two minutes.
- Install Claude Code. Run

cdto get to whatever folder you want to work in. - Launch it. Type
claudeand press enter. That's it.
From there, you describe what you want and Claude Code starts working. Your first session will feel magical. Your tenth will feel essential.
Real-world example: how we use Claude Code at RSL/A
Let me walk through an actual workflow to make this concrete.
Last week, we needed to create 12 blog posts for our AI agents content cluster. Here's what Claude Code did:
- Read our content strategy documents and blog checklist
- Wrote full 2,000+ word blog posts for each topic
- Generated 48 custom images (4 per post) using the Gemini API
- Uploaded every image to our Sanity CMS
- Created draft documents in Sanity with the full body content
- Patched SEO metadata (meta titles, descriptions, keywords) on each post
- Added FAQ schema for rich snippets
- Set up internal cross-references between related posts
- Assigned categories, author, and reading time
One person. One tool. What would have taken a content team weeks happened in sessions spread across a couple of days.

When Claude Code makes sense for your business

Claude Code is worth the investment if:
- You're doing repetitive technical work that could be automated
- You're building or maintaining a website and don't have a full-time developer
- You're a small agency that needs to punch above your weight
- You create content at scale and need to manage pipelines efficiently
- You're comfortable learning new tools and are willing to spend time with a terminal
Claude Code probably isn't for you if:
- You never work with files, code, or technical systems
- You only need an AI for casual conversation and quick questions
- You're not willing to review AI output before using it
- You need an AI that can browse the internet and access live data (without additional setup)
The bottom line
Claude Code is the most capable AI tool we've ever used. Not because it's the smartest (though it is excellent), but because it actually does the work. It doesn't advise. It doesn't suggest. It reads your files, understands your project, and builds what you describe.
