I use Claude Code for about 90% of my work. Claude Chat handles the other 10%. Cowork? Zero.
That's not the balanced comparison you were expecting. But after using all three products daily since Cowork launched, that's where I landed. And I think most people building things will end up in a similar spot.
Anthropic now has multiple products that all share the same brain. Same model, same reasoning, same intelligence. But the interface changes what's possible. And the interface you pick determines whether Claude feels like a toy or a teammate.
Claude Code, Claude Chat, and Claude Cowork are three different ways to use the same AI. Claude Code is a terminal agent that reads your files and builds things autonomously. Claude Chat is the web and desktop app for conversations. Cowork is a desktop feature that handles document tasks with local file access. One subscription covers all three. The question isn't which to pay for. It's which to open when you sit down to work.
What each product actually is
Anthropic's naming makes this confusing. So let me be direct.
Claude Chat is the web app at claude.ai and the desktop app. You type, it responds. Upload files, have conversations, get writing help, analyze data. If you've used ChatGPT or Gemini, you know what this is. The free tier now includes memory across conversations, file creation, code execution, web search, and Slack and Google Workspace integration. That's a lot more than "basic chat."
Claude Code is a command line agent. You install it, point it at a project folder, and it reads your entire codebase. Then it writes code, runs tests, fixes errors, deploys changes. Claude Cowork is a feature in the desktop app that lets you hand off tasks to Claude. Why I use Claude Code 90% of the time
Here's the thing. Claude Code isn't just for writing code. It's for doing work.
At RSL/A, Claude Code handles website builds, blog production pipelines, image generation, CMS updates, deployment, SEO audits, internal tooling. Basically anything that involves files on my machine and a result I need delivered.

That's a single session. What would take a team a full day takes an hour.
The reason it works this well comes down to two things.
First, CLAUDE.md files. These are context files that tell Claude Code about your project's architecture, rules, constraints, and conventions. Without them, you get generic output. With them, the output matches how your team actually works. I have CLAUDE.md files at every level of my workspace. Root level, project level, client level. Each one adds context that makes Claude Code smarter.
Second, file access. Claude Code reads everything in your project directory. Every file, every config, every log. When I say "fix the broken deployment," it reads the deployment scripts, the error logs, the environment variables, and the package files. Then it makes the changes directly. No copy-pasting. No uploading files one at a time.
That combination of context and access is why Claude Code handles 90% of the work. Nothing else comes close.

When Claude Chat wins
The other 10% is Claude Chat. And the reason is simple: convenience.
Claude Code needs to be opened in a specific working folder. You navigate to a project directory in your terminal and launch it there. That's how it knows which files to read and which CLAUDE.md to follow.
So when I just want to ask a quick question ("What's the A2P registration process for Twilio?") or brainstorm an approach before I start building, I don't want to open a terminal and navigate to a project folder. I open Claude Chat. Type the question. Get an answer. Done.
It's also my go-to for anything that doesn't involve files on my machine. Quick research. Explaining a concept to a client. Drafting a one-off email. Summarizing something I read. Tasks where the AI doesn't need to see or touch anything on my computer.
Claude Chat has gotten better too. The free tier now includes memory across conversations, file creation, code execution, and web search. The honest take on Cowork
I don't use Cowork. And I want to be upfront about why.
Cowork is designed for knowledge workers who want Claude Code's autonomy but work with documents instead of code. It handles tasks like organizing folders, building spreadsheets, preparing reports. You approve each step before it executes.
On paper, that's useful. In practice, Claude Code with the right MCP servers does everything Cowork does and more. I have MCP servers for Google Workspace, Notion, Sanity, Obsidian, Google Analytics. Claude Code can already read and write to all those systems directly from the terminal.
So for me, Cowork solves a problem I don't have. Claude Code already handles document work, research, and multi-step tasks because I've set it up to access those systems.
But here's who Cowork probably makes sense for: someone who works primarily with documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, doesn't want to touch a terminal, and doesn't have MCP servers configured. If you're a researcher, analyst, or consultant who lives in Google Docs and Excel, Cowork gives you file-level AI access without any setup. You just hand it a task and approve the steps.
